BE INSPIRED, TOGETHER.
I recently announced on Instagram that I am launching an HMO Mastermind group with Andy Graham.
The idea about starting my own mastermind was something that came about after Andy invited me to be a guest at his own Mastermind group at the beginning of March (pre-COVID-19 madness).
I’ve been part of an informal mastermind group for a while, which is made up of some experienced investors who I really enjoy chatting to. Every month or so we will jump on a Zoom call and have a bit of a catch-up. It’s lovely and I have a lot of respect for everyone on the group, and I know if I need a bit of guidance on anything one of them will most likely be able to advise. But more importantly I trust them as people.
So when I went along to Andy’s Mastermind I thought I knew what to expect and how the day would go, that it would be an informal chat amongst a group of people that were all really similar. I was wrong, the group meant business! Throughout the day everyone took it in turns to talk about their property business, where they wanted to go and any issues they were facing. The rest of the group offered sound advice and support throughout. I felt totally comfortable to chip in and add value where I could.
After lunch it was my turn to present a little bit about me, how I approach the design process and my thoughts on the power of branding. I started off by showing the group a 30-page document outlining the design process I follow for everything I create. We chatted about brand, and the power of Instagram and creating opportunities.
At around 5pm I had to dash off and start the drive back to Nottingham. In the car sat in traffic on the M1, it really hit me how powerful the day had been. It wasn’t that everyone in the room had 500 HMOs each, not at all. A few of the members hadn’t even done their first deal but had come from incredible business backgrounds so they added experience in other ways.
Collectively in the room they probably could have had a good go at ruling the world! And in my opinion that’s a special environment to be in, I remember thinking ‘how could you not benefit from being a part of that?’ Everyone had been selected to be part of the group for a particular reason, so that they could all add value to each other, total genius. I was very impressed!
A few weeks after I had a chat with Andy about potentially setting up my own all-female Mastermind as I love the idea of being able to facilitate that for the women in property, and this is definitely something that I may still do later this year. Andy was incredibly supportive of the idea and gave me lots to think about in terms of structure and value. After a few chats on the phone Andy mentioned to me that we had been pondering an all HMO focused Mastermind and asked if I would like to co-host it with him. Which of course I said yes I would love too!
From first-hand experience, a carefully selected Mastermind group is about a few key things; having a support network, setting goals, being accountable. But ultimately, the real power lies in who is in the room and the mindset that you can gain from being a part of that group.
I am really excited about our HMO Mastermind group, this is really aimed at investors who have started out but are really looking to take it up a gear. It’s a 12-month commitment where we all meet in Sheffield at the hipster venue of my dreams, The Chimney House for 1 full day a month.
Each month we will have a keynote speaker and everyone in the room will be given the chance to have their business focused on in small groups. We are aiming to launch in August 2020, but of course we have to take into consideration social distancing.
