Rip-Offs and Copycats – The Ugly Side of Property Branding

“Wow, have you seen this? It’s a copy of your properties.”
This was the message I woke up to a few weeks ago. My heart sank as I clicked the link, and what I saw left me fuming.
Someone had completely ripped off one of my recent projects – and on quite a large scale.
I’ve dealt with copycats before. You know, the usual suspects:
- People stealing my photos for fake room ads
- Using my images as stock photos without permission
- Imitating bits and pieces of my branding
But this? This felt different. More personal. More… shocking.
Imagine my shock when I discovered they were even putting themselves forward for a local design award, with the rip-offs of my designs.
So cue the latest and spontaneous episode of The Beespace Podcast, because I’m a bit fed up!

The Real Impact of Copycats
In this episode, I discuss the issue that’s plaguing our industry.
This isn’t just about ego – it’s about integrity and respect. When someone copies your work, they’re not just taking a few photos or design elements. They’re undermining the thousands of pounds and countless hours that go into creating original designs.
But it goes beyond just me and my business. This trend undermines the entire property development community. It creates a culture where originality is devalued, and shortcuts are celebrated.
That’s not the kind of industry I want to be part of, and I’m sure you don’t either.

Protecting Your Work and Building Authenticity
But I’m not just ranting (okay, maybe a little). I’m also sharing practical advice:
- Strategies to protect your intellectual property – From watermarking your images to registering your designs, there are steps you can take to safeguard your work.
- Developing your own unique brand identity – It’s not easy, but creating a brand that truly reflects you and your values is worth every ounce of effort. Want to talk to me about it?
- Why authenticity always wins in the long run – In a world of copycats, being genuinely you is your power. Clients, tenants, and investors can spot authenticity a mile away.

Let’s Start a Conversation
This episode is raw, it’s real, and yes – it’s a bit controversial. But I believe it’s a conversation we need to have in our industry.
After you’ve listened, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you experienced something similar? How did you handle it? Let’s share our experiences and support each other in building a more authentic, respectful property development community.
Remember, you’ll never inspire the world by trying to be like it. Be original, think differently. ✌🏻⚡
